'Video Killed the Radio Star'는 1980년 1월 10일에 발매된 영국의 뉴웨이브/신스 팝 듀오인 '버글스 (The Buggles)'의 1집 데뷔 앨범 [Age of Plastic]의 타이틀 곡이다.
'Video Killed the Radio Star'의 원곡은 프로그레시브 록 그룹이자 슈퍼그룹인 'Yes'와 'Asia'의 키보디스트이자 버글스의 멤버인 '제프 다운스'와 버글스의 멤버인 '트레버 혼 (Trevor Horn), 그리고 영국의 가수이자 작곡가인 '브루스 울리 (Bruce Woolley)가 만든 곡으로 1979년 11월에 발매된 'Bruce Woolley and The Camera Club'의 앨범 [English Garden]에 수록이 되었다.
이후 버글스의 멤버인 '트레버 혼'과 '제프 다운스'가 다시 작업을 하여 자신들의 앨범에 수록을 하였다. 이 곡에는 영화음악과 드라마 음악의 거장 '한스 짐머 (Hans Zimmer)'가 키보드와 신시사이저로 참여를 하였다.
버글스 버전의 'Video Killed the Radio Star'는 1979년 9월 7일에 싱글로 발표되었으며 노래는 그야말로 초대박 히트를 하였다. 노래의 내용은 비디오와 TV 때문에 라디오 스타들이 잊혀져 간다는 내용의 노래로 MTV가 나오던 1980년대의 상징과도 같은 노래가 되었다.
싱글 'Video Killed the Radio Star'는 미국 빌보드 싱글 차트에서는 40위에 그쳤지만, 영국을 비롯해서 호주, 스위스,, 스웨덴, 스페인, 오스트리아, 프랑스, 아일랜드, 일본 등 세계 16개국에서 차트 1위를 차지하면서 상업적으로 큰 성공을 거두었다.
